September 1, 2009
By The Gaines Group
GROTTOES - Wellness Concepts will celebrate their first step towards a LEED Platinum facility on September 9, 2009 at 8:30 am with a public groundbreaking ceremony on Dogwood Avenue between 10th and 11th street. This event will mark the beginning of a project that will set a new standard for construction in Central Virginia. With a goal of achieving platinum certification in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green rating system, this facility will strive to achieve a 35%+ annual energy savings and a 30% reduction in water usage. The project will feature the use of 20%+ regional materials and 20%+ recycled content while diverting 75%+ of all construction waste from landfills, and providing healthy indoor air quality and plenty of natural light for the facilities staff. This totally concrete building will stand as an example of how to build energy efficient, reduce waste, and preserve natural resources.
Wellness Concepts is a long-term care pharmacy and has been serving nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and facilities licensed by the Department of Mental health in Virginia since 1999. Wellness Concepts is a subsidiary of Valley Pharmacies, Inc. and is owned and operated by Daniel Atwell, RPh, MBA, and Cathie Atwell, Manager.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green building rating system encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria. LEED is a third party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings' performance. LEED promotes a whole building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
